Prince’s death came as a shock and broke the hearts of fans around the world. But his family and those closest to him have probably had the most difficult time dealing with his passing, and that includes his first wife Mayte Garcia.

This man was my everything, we had a family. I am beyond deeply saddened and devastated.

“This man was my everything, we had a family. I am beyond deeply saddened and devastated,”

Garcia said in a statement to People.

“I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally.”

The Boricua and the iconic artist had quite the love story (he was 15 years her senior!) — here are five things you (probably) didn’t know:

      1. Mayte met Prince when she was only 16-years-old

The year was 1990 — Garcia met Prince while at a concert in Germany. The Alabama-born Puerto Rican’s mom, who was a huge fan of the iconic “Purple Rain” singer, passed along a video to Prince of her daughter dancing. He was impressed and hired Garcia to be a dancer on his Diamonds and Pearl Tour. She later even got to do English and Spanish vocals on his albums.

“When we met I was a virgin and had never been with anybody,” Garcia told UK’s Mirror. “I’d always been a very focused dancer and very protected. Prince was my first crush, and my first love, but we didn’t start to get serious until I turned 18. He was very respectful.”

      2. Mayte inspired Prince’s song “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”

In 1994, four years after first meeting, Prince wrote “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” about Garcia. And he didn’t stop there — in 1995 he produced an entire album for her called Child of the Sun. In an interview, Garcia even said that no other man could measure up to those musical gestures. “All the songs he wrote for me, that’s a pretty hard act to follow,” she said. “I’ve dated a couple of guys, musicians, who have written me poems or songs and I’m like, ‘Seriously, don’t even go there. You can’t compete!’”

      3. Wedding bells rang for the couple on Valentine’s Day 1996

Prince and Mayte were married in Minneapolis when Garcia was 22 and the multi-talented singer was 37. Garcia wore a dress she designed herself, along with help from Prince’s wardrobe designer, Bonnie Flesland. “Being a wife, I loved it,” she once shared. “He’s true to what you guys think, of course, he’s a human being.”

      4. Mayte learned she was pregnant with the couple’s first child two months after they wed

Prince and Garcia welcomed their first child, a son named Boy Gregory, on October 16, 1996. Sadly, due to being born with a condition called Pfeiffer syndrome, their baby passed only a week later. Mayte became pregnant again after losing their first child but in what became another turn of heartbreaking events, she suffered a miscarriage. “To lose two babies is really scary, it really caught on me emotionally, physically, everything,” Garcia told UK’s Mirror. “It took me at least 15 years to get over it and still, to this day, I miss my son.”

And Mayte said that losing their children, greatly contributed to tearing down their marriage. “I believe a child dying between a couple either makes you stronger or it doesn’t,” she said. “For me, it was very, very hard to move forward and for us as a couple I think it probably broke us.”

When news of Prince’s death surfaced, Garcia said he was now reunited with their son.

      5. Prince and Mayte split in 1998

Two years after tying the knot, Prince and Garcia separated. They formally divorced in 2000. “When I got divorced, it was another culture shock. It was going from this world I had been into since the age of 16 to literally standing on the streets of New York in kind of shock,” she said in a VH1 Hollywood Exes clip.

In a 2015 interview, Mayte revealed that while she wasn’t in love with her ex-husband, “I will always love him — he’s a great guy.”

        INTERVIEW – MAY 1997

        THE ARTIST
        By Spike Lee

Spike Lee: Let’s talk about your last couple of years at [your former label] Warner Bros. records. Would it be safe to say that the music you were putting out was just fulfilling a contract, or were you giving the best you had to offer at that time?

The Artist: I was doing my best to fulfill my contract. You can now hear that my soul has been in love with [my wife] Mayte for thousands of years. I believe that I was just trying to express it in a simple record. I wanted to say friend, lover, sister, mother, wife back then, but it wasn’t the time. If you check the video for the song “Seven,” you will see Mayte and I walking through the doors hand-in-hand and the dove exploding. That was when I spiritually checked out of the situation; but I did what I had to do.

I took a part out from this interview to post here because I’m interested in others opinion on Prince’s statement. What songs or album was he relating to when he made this statement? I’ve heard the song Seven before (didn’t like it) but I am just now listening to some of the songs he made between 94-98.

And what songs are confirmed by him or Mayte to be about him and Mayte’s relationship?

          Mayte, Mayte, Mayte

“I finally feel like I’m in love and I always wanted to have a baby out of love not out of desperation.”

I can’t say for sure which songs Prince confirmed having written about Mayte…but I think they are: “Man O War”, “Eye Love U, But Eye Don’t Trust U Anymore”, “Wasted Kisses”, “Pearls B4 Swine”, “Man In A Uniform”, “She Gave Her Angels” “Friend, Lover Mother, & Wife”…and for sure the last three.

Oh and I read her book “The Beautiful One” and was sorely disappointed…it was mostly a book concerning her and her battles.

Oh wow. I never read her book. I did read on the internet about some of the stuff she said. What did she say about Prince and Vanity? I know a little about the thunderbolt thing but just pieces of info. Did the book leave you thinking she made Prince out to be the bad guy?

Yes it did.  He came across as a stingy, defective, and unfaithful man. While she came across as a fighter, faithful, loving, chaste, and altogether perfect woman who never wanted more from him than to be loved. It was an awful book that left me very angry. She didn’t even say anything about his relationship with Vanity nor with Susanah whom, to me, seemed his best choices in women!

That’s crazy she would do that to him and on the anniversary of his death! I actually feel sorry for all those women P did wrong. I’ve no one in particular to choose when it involves how he treated not just his women, but his friends and all. I love Prince as an artist, but he definitely had some side-eye stuff going at some points. Lol. Even though he did a few wrong, he deserves better than someone to wait til after his death and throw him under the bus to the world. How do we even know everything is accurate and real truth? I think she was very much hurt behind him kicking her to the curb and whatever else he did before the public that hurt her. Scorned and seems like getting revenged while making a profit. Wow.

You’re right we have no way of knowing the exact truth about the relationship…Prince was known to have a wandering eye…but I think, it’s a flaw that can be traced back to his childhood… Usually men who have no respect for women and thus end up dating a slew of them is due to the fact that their mother figure wasn’t a strong one but one subject to be scorned. But one thing I can say is that the fact that she waited until his death to write her atrocious book speaks volumes against her…especially since she made herself out to be the victim.

During Lovesexy, when he was talking about having no one but himself if everyone left him … I believe he knew he really was a complicated man in others eyes and that his extreme devotion to music and the late night gigs and partying would inevitably run some of these people off. At least those that wanted a serious relationship with him. So he had so many to replace one with another for what he deep down felt would eventually happen–them leaving him. He definitely had serious issues with abandonment. And I believe he was a depressed person since when he was a kid. I also think he had some insecurities going. Just my opinion. Shame though. He seemed like a sweet guy but had habits that was too hard to break. It’s like he was fighting with himself. IDK.

I couldn’t have said it better myself! Even Prince would agree…in many of his songs he sings of being alone and abandoned…being rich and famous never helped him for it made people, to paraphrase what he said in an interview, nice to his face but cruel to him once his back was turned! Alas there are alot of people who are never themselves but always feign to be something they think might make others like them…

I think he lied when he said he didn’t let what people say get to him. I think he lied when he said he always wore heels cause the women liked it. I think he hated (not the musical/genius part of him) the type of person he was. He really did see himself different from the rest. The part I could never get around really is the part of him that would constantly do things that WOULD LIKELY run people off! Those that really cared about him, like Andre, Jill, Susan, Denise, Sheila, and some others that knew him before the Purple Rain fame. He did shady stuff and treated them more horribly than good. The Time… Dez… I’m sure he probably wasn’t trying to mess over people intentionally, like waking up one morning and saying “who am I going to piss off today. He just had old habits the was more than hard to die. And speaking of dying, he have too many songs where he either wanted to die or felt like he was already dead because someone hurt him, yet he had a habit, it seems, of saying that nothing people say gets to him and it usually say something about that person instead. The man was just too secretive to admit the deep, personal truth about his ways. Either way, regardless of the bad, he most definitely made up for it by helping the less fortunate and giving to the needy, and helping new artist be known. Can’t leave out his genius and commitment to music, and when he loved, he loved hard.

I think Prince was secretive and untrustworthy because of his great fame and wealth…he found his disappointments in relationships to be too many. He had always been weird and misunderstood resulting in his not fitting in well with others… His talent and intelligence probably alienated a lot of people. I don’t think he ever really found someone to understand him well enough and if he did he probably fled from them from fear of being finally accepted and loved to his full potential…it wasn’t until he got older that he realized his mistakes. I don’t think Prince was a bad person he was just difficult to get along with.
